Sanjay Garg Assumes Charge as Director General of Bureau of Indian Standards

New Delhi, November 3, 2025: Senior civil servant Shri Sanjay Garg, IAS (1994 batch, Kerala cadre), has taken charge as the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, effective 1 November 2025.

With over three decades of distinguished service, Shri Garg brings extensive administrative and policy experience spanning agriculture, food logistics, defence industry, industrial promotion, finance, and social development. His leadership is expected to further strengthen BIS’s role in advancing India’s standardisation ecosystem, enhancing product quality, and supporting the nation’s growing export and manufacturing ambitions.

Before assuming his new role, Shri Garg served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and as Secretary, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure, he led the digital transformation of research management and administration, notably through the integration of advanced IT systems and digital monitoring tools. He also spearheaded the nationwide expansion of the Kisan Sarathi portal, a pioneering platform that connects farmers directly with agricultural scientists for real-time expert guidance.

Shri Garg’s wide-ranging career includes work on World Bank–supported projects in India and significant contributions to the promotion and deregulation of the defence and industrial sectors, including initiatives to modernise and expand the leather industry.

As the new head of BIS, Shri Garg will guide the institution’s strategic direction in standardisation, conformity assessment, and quality assurance, ensuring greater alignment with global benchmarks while fostering consumer protection and industrial competitiveness. He will also serve as President of India’s National Committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), representing the country in key international forums on standards development.

His appointment is seen as pivotal in driving BIS’s vision of “One Nation, One Standard,” and in strengthening India’s leadership within the global standards community through technology, transparency, and stakeholder collaboration.
