New Delhi, October 21 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran actor Shri Govardhan Asrani, fondly known simply as Asrani, one of Indian cinema’s most loved comedians and character actors.
In a heartfelt post on X, the Prime Minister remembered Asrani as a “gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist” who brought laughter and joy to countless audiences across generations.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister said in his message.
Asrani, whose career spanned over five decades, appeared in more than 350 films across Hindi and regional languages. Known for his impeccable comic timing, he became a household name with memorable roles in films like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar.
The Prime Minister’s condolence reflects the national outpouring of grief and admiration for the late actor, whose work bridged eras and generations of Indian cinema-goers.
