Port Blair Nov 1: With a renewed push to end frequent outages and stabilise electricity supply, the A&N Administration is fast-tracking power generation and restoration measures across South Andaman.
The Electricity Department, A&N Administration, has intensified efforts to augment generation capacity and ensure steady power supply to consumers in South Andaman.
In recent weeks, 5.5 MW has been added to the grid through the revival of diesel generator (DG) units at the 10 MW private power plant in Bambooflat — with 2.5 MW synchronized on September 14 and another 3 MW on October 26. This has raised the total available capacity during evening peak hours from 33 MW to 38.5 MW.
Further enhancement is underway with the revival of an additional 1 MW DG set at Bambooflat, expected to be completed by November 10. Simultaneously, installation of a new 2.5 MW DG set at the Phoenix Bay Power House is progressing, with commissioning targeted by mid-November.
To secure long-term stability, the Administration has also executed two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) approved by the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission — one for 10 MW and another for 5 MW. Both projects are on track for completion by the end of November.
The department noted that these combined initiatives will bring South Andaman significantly closer to power supply normalization, strengthening grid reliability and meeting the region’s growing energy demand.
Alongside capacity expansion, the Administration is promoting rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG-MBY). With central and UT subsidies on offer, the scheme aims to make households energy self-reliant while advancing the Administration’s broader vision of “de-dieselization” and sustainable power generation.
