For the first time in years, adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts have the chance to witness a spectacle like no other — the mesmerizing might of India’s only active volcano at Barren Island. The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has announced the reintroduction of a special cruise to Barren Island aboard MV Sindhu, setting sail tomorrow, October 24.
This exclusive voyage marks a thrilling return to one of the most breathtaking experiences the Andaman Sea has to offer — a front-row encounter with the raw, untamed beauty of nature. As the cruise departs from Port Blair, passengers will enjoy a full day of excitement, discovery, and serene luxury at sea.
As dawn breaks, travellers will be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise view over Barren Island. The golden hues of morning light dancing across the island’s volcanic cone create an awe-inspiring panorama that photographers and dreamers alike will cherish forever. “It’s an experience that connects you directly with the primal forces of the Earth,” said a DSS official. “We’re thrilled to bring back this cruise, blending adventure and comfort for both residents and visitors to the islands.”
The journey, designed for both leisure and learning, includes:
Guided coastal viewing of Barren Island’s dramatic volcanic landscape (no landing permitted).
Onboard dining with freshly prepared meals.
Entertainment and recreation, featuring an onboard DJ, performances by local artists, telescope viewing, games, and a mini library.
Stringent safety measures with trained crew and all essential life-saving and environmental protocols in place.
This initiative is part of the Administration’s broader tourism revival plan, highlighting sustainable adventure experiences that respect the fragile marine ecosystem while promoting the islands as a premier eco-tourism destination.
The Barren Island cruise represents the perfect blend of thrill, tranquility, and education — an unforgettable journey for every explorer at heart,” remarked a local tourism official.
Passenger embarkation will begin at 7:00 PM from Haddo Wharf and close sharply at 8:30 PM. Travellers have been advised to report well in advance, as late arrivals will not be permitted to board.
So, pack your sense of wonder — and set sail into a night of music, adventure, and fiery beauty as MV Sindhu steers toward one of Earth’s rarest natural marvels.
