Andaman cracks down on child sexual crimes

Mayabunder Sept 29: Justice for the vulnerable is finally gaining teeth in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, as the North & Middle Andaman District Police reinforce a zero-tolerance stand against sexual crimes targeting children. In a resounding message to predators, a Special POCSO Court has sentenced a convicted child abuser to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000.

The judgment, pronounced on 25 September 2025 by Special Judge (POCSO) Subhajit Basu, marks a critical victory in the fight to protect minors. The case involved the heinous assault of a young girl by her stepfather — a betrayal of trust that drew swift and decisive police action. Once the crime came to light, a case was immediately registered under the POCSO Act, 2012 and sections of the IPC, setting in motion a thorough investigation that ensured the survivor’s voice was not drowned by fear or delay.

This outcome underscores a larger shift in the islands’ approach to crimes against children: speedy investigations, coordinated prosecution, and unwavering resolve to bring offenders to book. Authorities stressed that such verdicts are not just punitive but serve as powerful deterrents, warning that sexual offenses against minors will be met with the harshest consequences under the law.

Officials reiterated their commitment to defending the dignity of the most vulnerable members of society and urged citizens to report any suspicious or unlawful activities through police helplines — assuring confidentiality and protection for whistle-blowers.

This case stands as more than a singular success; it signals an evolving justice system that prioritises swift accountability over impunity, affirming that in the Andamans, crimes against children will not be tolerated, ignored, or forgiven.
