DRDO Successfully Tests Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based Mobile Launcher

DRDO and SFC successfully test Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher, marking India’s entry into select nations with this capability.

New Delhi, Sept 25: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully carried out the launch of the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system under full operational conditions on September 24, 2025.

Designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 km, the next-generation Agni-Prime is equipped with advanced features and represents a major step in strengthening India’s strategic capabilities.

This first-of-its-kind launch was conducted from a specially designed rail-based launcher, capable of moving freely on the railway network without pre-conditions. The system offers cross-country mobility, reduced visibility, and rapid reaction capability, while being self-sustained with independent launch features, state-of-the-art communication systems, and protection mechanisms.

The missile’s trajectory was tracked by multiple ground stations, and officials confirmed that the mission met all objectives in what they described as a “textbook launch.” The successful test will pave the way for the induction of futuristic rail-based systems into India’s strategic arsenal.

The Road Mobile variant of Agni-Prime has already been inducted after multiple trials. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, SFC, and the Armed Forces, noting that the test places India among a select group of nations with canisterised rail-launch capability.

Senior scientists from DRDO and officers of SFC witnessed the launch. Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman complimented the teams involved in the successful mission.
