A&N rowers set sights on national waters

Port Blair, Sept. 23: Over the years, Andaman & Nicobar Islands have quietly nurtured sporting talent that has rowed, swum, and sailed its way into the national limelight. Now, the oars will once again hit the water as the Andaman & Nicobar Rowing Association gears up to select the Island’s team for the 45th Junior National Rowing Championship and the 8th Inter State Challenger National Rowing Championship to be held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, from November 14 to 18, 2025.

The selection trial is scheduled for October 4, 2025, from 6:00 AM onwards at the SAI Water Sports Complex, Sippighat. Registration will close on October 3 at 5:00 PM, with interested athletes required to contact Shri Rama Rao (9434298433 / 7063917051).

Islands of Talent: The Island has long been a cradle for water sports. From the archipelago’s serene backwaters to its challenging tides, local youth have trained under demanding natural conditions that shape endurance, grit, and discipline. Over the past decade, island athletes have made their mark in rowing, canoeing, and kayaking, earning medals at national championships and even representing India at Asian and international events.

In fact, the Islands’ rowers have brought home a steady haul of medals in recent years. At the Junior Nationals and Challenger events, A&N teams have clinched multiple podium finishes, including golds in team events and silvers and bronzes in single sculls. Several island athletes have also earned places in India’s training camps, with a handful going on to represent the country at Asian-level competitions, where they proved that even athletes from remote territories can compete shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the region. These achievements have placed the Islands firmly on India’s water sports map.

Beyond the Trials: Rowing is more than just a sport here; it symbolizes the deep bond islanders share with water. Every young athlete who picks up the oar carries with them the pride of the Andaman seas—and the dream of seeing the Islands represented on the national podium. For small businesses, communities, and schools across Port Blair and beyond, each victory by a local athlete resonates as a collective achievement.

As the selection trials approach, the excitement is palpable. Parents, coaches, and fellow athletes are rallying around the contenders, hopeful that Bhopal will once again echo with the names of Andaman & Nicobar rowers standing tall among India’s finest.
