Casting knowledge for prosperity: KVK trains Diglipur farmers in sustainable aquaculture

Diglipur Nov 3: In a major step toward promoting sustainable livelihoods through aquaculture, the ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (N&M Andaman), under ICAR–CIARI, organized a five-day NFDB-sponsored training programme on “Water Quality Management in Aquaculture” from October 29 to November 2, 2025, at Milan Gram Community Hall, Laxmipur Gram Panchayat, Diglipur.

The training aimed to equip rural farmers and youth with scientific knowledge and hands-on skills to take up freshwater fish farming for improved income and food security.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. V. Damodaran, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK N&M Andaman, in the presence of Ashim Mistry, PRI member of Laxmipur Gram Panchayat. In his address, Dr. Damodaran highlighted the vast potential of aquaculture in the region, particularly with Indian major carps such as Catla, Rohu, and Mrigal. He emphasized adopting scientific methods and modern technology to enhance productivity and ensure sustainability.

Subham Debroy, SMS (Fisheries Science), explained the importance of maintaining key water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity for healthy fish growth, followed by live demonstrations on water testing and pond management.

Assistant Fisheries Development Officer, Ujjain Dhali, and Fisheries Inspector, Dr. Vijay Prasad, sensitized participants on sustainable aquaculture practices and the benefits available under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Rakesh Dawar, SMS (Agronomy), also introduced the integrated paddy-cum-fish farming system, which optimizes land and water use for higher returns.

Certificates were distributed to the 35 participants during the valedictory session by Sujan Kumar Das, Pradhan, Laxmipur Gram Panchayat. The programme was held under the guidance of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director (Acting), ICAR–CIARI.
