Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 21: In a significant personnel welfare measure, the Andaman and Nicobar Police have approved the introduction of Special Grade designations for Constables and Head Constables serving across multiple wings of the force. The decision, announced through an official press release, marks a landmark step in recognising long years of service and strengthening career progression within the police establishment.
The benefit will extend to personnel of the A&N Police (Executive), Fire Service, Police Radio, PMT, PMF and the India Reserve Battalion (IRBn). Under the new framework, Constables who have completed 15 years of service as on January 1 of the relevant year, and who have already been granted the first Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP), will be permitted to wear the designation of Head Constable (Special Grade). The upgradation is intended to formally acknowledge their experience and sustained contribution to policing duties.
Similarly, Head Constables who have rendered 25 years of total service, including a minimum of five years in the rank of Head Constable, and who have been granted both the first and second MACP, will be eligible for upgradation as Assistant Sub-Inspector (Special Grade). The move is aimed at offering enhanced professional recognition and meaningful advancement to eligible personnel without altering the existing promotional structure.
According to the release, the decision is expected to benefit nearly 85 per cent of the police force, with around 57 per cent of personnel likely to gain immediate advantage upon fulfilment of the prescribed service criteria. The initiative is anticipated to have a positive impact on morale, motivation, and professional standing within the force.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police have placed on record their gratitude to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Admiral D. K. Joshi, and the Chief Secretary, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, for their support in facilitating the decision. Special appreciation has also been expressed for the Director General of Police, H. G. S. Dhaliwal, whose leadership and sustained efforts were instrumental in advancing the proposal.
The press note further stated that detailed procedures and modalities for implementation of the Special Grade designations are currently under finalisation and will be communicated to the force in due course.
