A&N Administration Encourages Student Visits to Cellular Jail to Promote Freedom Struggle Awareness

Sri Vijaya Puram, January 22: In pursuance of the guidance given by the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a cultural programme held at Sri Vijaya Puram on December 12, 2025, the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has initiated measures to strengthen awareness among children and youth about India’s freedom struggle and the ideals of Veer Savarkar.

Accordingly, the Art & Culture Department, A&N Administration, has urged educational institutions to facilitate visits of students to the National Memorial, Cellular Jail. These visits aim to instil patriotism and provide firsthand exposure to the sacrifices made by freedom fighters incarcerated at the Cellular Jail. Students from schools, colleges and other institutions are permitted to visit the memorial free of cost.

Student participation in such educational visits has witnessed a significant rise, increasing from 51 schools with 3,082 students in 2024 to 144 schools involving 9,395 students across the Islands in 2025. Institutions may contact the Art & Culture Department in person or via email at artand.culture@and.nic.in to facilitate visits.

Additionally, the Administration is planning awareness-oriented academic activities, including slogan competitions at school level and book review programmes at college and higher education level, to highlight the life and contributions of Veer Savarkar and foster national pride among youth.
