Andaman & Nicobar Islands to Witness Major Coastal Security Exercise ‘Sagar Kavach 01/26’

A two-day coastal security exercise, ‘Sagar Kavach 01/26’, will be conducted across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 14 to test preparedness against maritime infiltration and terror threats.

Port Blair, May 12: A large-scale coastal security exercise aimed at testing the preparedness of security and defence agencies against sea-borne threats will be conducted across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 14 to May 15 under the codename “Sagar Kavach – SKV 01/26”.

The two-day exercise, scheduled to commence at 6 AM on May 14 and conclude at 6 PM on May 15, will simulate attempts of hostile infiltration through maritime routes, including mock terror-style attacks on strategically significant locations and vulnerable coastal points in the island territory.

According to officials, the drill has been designed to evaluate the operational readiness of coastal security mechanisms, inter-agency coordination, surveillance capabilities and emergency response systems in the event of a maritime security breach. During the exercise, specially designated “Red Force” teams will attempt simulated infiltration and penetration operations to assess how effectively security forces detect, intercept and neutralise threats.

The exercise is expected to witness the participation of multiple agencies involved in maritime and coastal security, including defence units, coastal police, marine forces, intelligence agencies and other stakeholders responsible for safeguarding the strategically sensitive archipelago.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold immense geopolitical and maritime significance due to their proximity to key international shipping lanes in the Indo-Pacific region. In recent years, the islands have emerged as a critical strategic outpost for India’s maritime security framework, prompting regular reviews and strengthening of coastal defence preparedness.

Officials noted that exercises such as “Sagar Kavach” play a vital role in identifying security gaps, improving operational synergy among agencies and enhancing rapid-response capabilities against evolving maritime threats, including infiltration, smuggling and terror-linked activities originating from sea routes.

Authorities have advised residents not to be alarmed by the increased movement of security personnel, patrol vessels, checkpoints, mock tactical deployments or other unusual activities during the exercise period, clarifying that the operations are part of a pre-planned security preparedness drill.

Members of the public have also been urged to cooperate with participating agencies to ensure the smooth and effective conduct of the exercise across the islands.
