Saluting the unsung sentinels: Police pay tribute to fallen heroes

Port Blair Oct 21: Every October 21, the nation pauses to remember the ultimate sacrifice of those who wear the khaki — men and women who stood their ground in the face of danger to keep the country safe. The Andaman & Nicobar Police joined the rest of the nation in solemnly observing National Police Commemoration Day, paying heartfelt tributes to the brave Police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

A Commemoration Day Parade was held at the Police Lines Parade Ground, where Shri H S Dhaliwal, Director General of Police, led officers in the wreath-laying ceremony. The occasion saw the participation of senior officers, families of martyrs, and retired Deputy Superintendents of Police — all united in honouring the indomitable spirit and selfless service of India’s police force.

This observance carries profound historical significance. October 21 marks the date in 1959 when ten valiant Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel made the supreme sacrifice while defending India’s frontiers at Hot Springs, Ladakh, following an ambush by Chinese troops. Their courage under fire became a lasting symbol of duty and devotion — leading to the annual observance of Police Commemoration Day across the country.

To honour their memory, a National Police Memorial – “Shaheed Vedi” – stands at Hot Springs, Ladakh, where police representatives from across India gather each year to pay homage to the fallen heroes and reaffirm their commitment to serve with courage and integrity.

Speaking on the occasion, dignitaries highlighted the vital role of the police in maintaining peace, law, and public safety, often at great personal risk. The ceremony served as a reminder that every fallen officer’s story is a testament to the resilience, valor, and unwavering sense of duty that defines the policing fraternity.

As wreaths were laid and heads bowed in silence, the message resonated clearly — the uniform may fade, but the sacrifice is eternal.
