Port Blair, November 5: With the rollout of revised rates and new regulatory measures under GST 2.0, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has intensified its compliance enforcement drive across the Union Territory.
Despite extensive outreach and sufficient transition time, officials said several business establishments continue to flout the updated GST rates, exemptions, and reporting norms.
Under the supervision of the Commissioner (UTGST), dedicated enforcement teams have been carrying out surprise inspections of business establishments in Sri Vijaya Puram and adjoining areas since September 22. As part of the ongoing drive, 46 business units have been inspected to verify adherence to the revised GST provisions.
According to the Department, the inspections uncovered instances of incorrect rate application, non-display of GST registration details, and failure to issue tax invoices as per the prescribed format. On-the-spot penalties were imposed in accordance with the GST Act and Rules, resulting in the recovery of Rs 2.53 lakh from defaulting traders so far.
Officials said the drive is part of a sustained compliance campaign aimed at ensuring uniform implementation of the GST 2.0 framework across the Islands. The enforcement teams will expand their coverage in the coming weeks, targeting additional sectors and regions.
“The Department’s focus is not punitive but corrective,” an official said. “We aim to strengthen voluntary compliance and protect consumers by ensuring that the benefits of GST reforms are properly passed on.”
Businesses have been advised to strictly adhere to the revised GST rates, exemption notifications, and procedural norms to avoid penal action. The Department has also warned that continued non-compliance may attract prosecution under applicable provisions of the GST law.
To promote transparency, citizens and traders have been encouraged to report instances of GST violations or irregularities via WhatsApp at 9595359698. The Department also welcomes queries and clarification requests on GST rates, exemptions, or related matters.
Officials added that the enforcement initiative under GST 2.0 reflects the Administration’s broader commitment to transparent taxation, fair trade practices, and consumer protection across the Union Territory.
