Campbell Bay Nov 04: Community unites to promote scientific breeding and phase out scrub bulls for a stronger dairy future.
A quiet revolution is taking shape in Great Nicobar’s dairy sector. Through a series of awareness programs held at Joginder Nagar and Campbell Bay, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has ignited a new wave of scientific curiosity and community action among local dairy farmers and Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) representatives.
Organized under the Laxmi Nagar, Govind Nagar, and Campbell Bay Gram Panchayats, the sessions drew enthusiastic participation from farmers, PRI members, and community leaders including E.S. Rajesh, Pramukh, Campbell Bay; Sanjay Ekka, Up-Pramukh; and several Pradhans and ward members from the region.
Experts from AH&VS explained how Artificial Insemination (AI) can transform dairy farming by enhancing milk yield, improving cattle genetics, and boosting rural income. Participants also learned about modern practices such as using sex-sorted semen for producing female calves and the economic potential of cattle by-products—ranging from biogas generation to crafting eco-friendly incense sticks from cow dung.
The highlight of the discussions was a community resolution acknowledging that the unchecked presence of scrub bulls has hindered AI adoption in Great Nicobar. United in purpose, participants resolved to carry out a coordinated castration.
