Port Blair, Oct. 19: In a major boost to healthcare and higher medical education in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) has secured the National Medical Commission (NMC) approval for 13 Post Graduate (PG) seats across six key medical disciplines — a landmark development that promises to transform specialist healthcare services in the Islands.
The newly approved PG seats cover a diverse range of disciplines vital to the healthcare system, including MD in Microbiology (3 seats), MD in Biochemistry (2 seats), MD in Anaesthesiology (3 seats), MS in General Surgery (2 seats), MS in Anatomy (2 seats), and MS in Ophthalmology (1 seat).
This milestone is not merely an academic expansion — it marks a turning point in the Islands’ journey toward medical self-reliance, enabling ANIIMS to nurture home-grown specialists who can serve the unique healthcare needs of the region.
Officials from ANIIMS described the NMC approval as a validation of the institute’s growing standards in teaching, infrastructure, and clinical training. With these new PG seats, ANIIMS is set to become a hub of advanced medical education in the Union Territory, attracting talent and expertise that will strengthen tertiary healthcare delivery across the Islands.
The initiative also resonates with the national vision of “Viksit Bharat @ 2047”, which emphasizes equitable access to quality education and healthcare in every corner of the nation.
As ANIIMS continues its journey of excellence, this achievement stands as a testament to its commitment to building a robust, self-sustaining healthcare ecosystem for the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands — one that not only heals but also educates and empowers.
