Crackdown on Campus Tobacco: Ferrargunj shops face surprise Inspection

Port Blair, Oct. 16: In a determined move to protect students and young people from the dangers of tobacco, the District Administration, South Andaman, conducted a joint surprise inspection at Ferrargunj Tehsil today to enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.

Revenue officials, accompanied by Police personnel, inspected commercial establishments and shops located within 100 yards of educational institutions, including GSSS Ferrargunj, GSSS Namunaghar, and GPS Ranchi Basti (Namunaghar Village).

During the inspection, vendors were advised to strictly comply with the COTPA provisions that prohibit the sale of tobacco products near schools and educational institutions. Officials warned that any future violations will attract firm legal action.

Reiterating its commitment to a tobacco-free environment, the Administration said that regular surprise checks will continue to ensure complete compliance. Citizens have also been urged to report any illegal sale of tobacco near schools by contacting the District Control Room at 03192-240127 / 238881 / 1070 or via WhatsApp at 9531888844.

The Administration assured that informants’ identities will remain confidential, encouraging public participation in safeguarding the health and well-being of students across the Islands.
